Frequently Asked Questions

These are important things you should look into before booking a course

  • In our workshops, you carve your own ring from wax using simple tools and guidance from us. After the session, your design is professionally cast into solid sterling silver.

  • Wax carving is a hands-on jewellery technique where you shape your design from wax before it is transformed into metal through casting. The wax disappears in the process — and what remains is your ring in silver.

GENERAL questions

workshops questions

  • We aim to create a safe and relaxed workshop environment.

We work with sharp handheld tools and occasionally a small flame. Minor cuts or burns can happen if tools are handled carelessly, so we ask everyone to follow the guidance given during the workshop.

Some equipment in the studio is for staff use only.

Fine wax dust may be produced while filing and sanding. Protective masks are available for anyone who prefers to use one.

A first aid kit and fire extinguishers are available on site.

Please note that participants are responsible for their own wellbeing and personal belongings during the workshop.

  • You have plenty of creative freedom within certain technical limits.

Simple bands, organic shapes and textured surfaces work beautifully. Highly detailed carvings or very thin structures are not recommended due to time and casting constraints.

The thinnest parts of the ring must be at least 0.8 mm thick.

At Sölv, we currently focus on subtractive wax carving.

  • Just yourself.
We provide all tools and materials — and something to drink while you work.

  • For safety and quality reasons, we ask all participants to use the tools and materials provided by the studio.

  • Yes, simple engraving can be carved during the workshop.

Keep in mind that engraving takes extra time and works best with a simpler overall design.

  • Minor resizing is sometimes possible, depending on the design. Because each ring is unique, resizing options vary. If you’re unsure about sizing during the workshop, we’ll help you measure carefully before you start.

  • Our workshops are designed around sterling silver, which is a durable, beautiful and relatively affordable precious metal for everyday jewellery.

If you’re interested in casting your ring in another metal, such as gold, please contact us before booking so we can discuss the possibilities.

  • Wax can be fragile when thin, and breaks do happen.

Most issues can be repaired. And if something doesn’t go as planned, we have pre-made models to ensure everyone leaves with a design ready for casting.

You will always leave with a design that can be cast in silver.

  • The workshop price includes one silver ring up to 8 grams.

If your design exceeds 8 g, additional silver costs are charged based on the market price at the time of casting. We can estimate the weight during the workshop, so there are no surprises.

  • Yes. You can choose between a polished or matte finish during the workshop.

The smoother your wax surface, the smoother the final silver ring will be.

  • You don’t need to know your ring size beforehand.

You carve the wax ring directly to fit your own finger during the workshop, ensuring a perfect fit.

  • Wear something comfortable. You might get a little wax dust on your clothes, so we recommend brushing off before you leave. The wax won’t stain.

  • To keep the workspace clean and safe, we kindly ask that food is not consumed during the workshop.

  • After the workshop, your wax ring is sent to our casting partner, where it is cast into solid sterling silver.

Once returned to us, we carefully finish each ring by hand before preparing it for shipping or pick-up.

The full process takes approximately 3–4 weeks.

  • Yes. All rings are cast in recycled sterling silver (925).

  • Minor resizing may be possible, depending on the design.

  • The workshop is mainly held in English.

We can also guide in Finnish, Swedish or Norwegian if needed.
